Armistead Maupin’s Untold Tales — A Big Critical Success

November 4, 2017 By Barbara Falconer Newhall

Here’s the trailer for “The Untold Tales of Armistead Maupin”

By Barbara Falconer Newhall

Armistead Maupin hits the top of the charts again. His “Tales of the City” books have been popular favorites for decades. And the TV series based on his books won the hearts of many. Now, Jennifer M. Kroot’s documentary “The Untold Tales of Armistead Maupin” is No. 4 — No. 4! — on the San Francisco Chronicle’s Critical Consensus list — just below “Dunkirk,” “Served Like a Girl” and “Blade Runner. 2049.”

The newly released film — which features a bit part from me in which I reminisce about the years Maupin and I worked together at the Chronicle — earned an average score of 8.9 out of 10 points from major film critics across the country. Critics are loving it, and I imagine moviegoers are, too.

The documentary beats out dozens of movies on the list, including “Brawl in Cell Block 99,” “Lucky,” “Bending the Arc” and “The Last Dalai Lama?”

Maupin and I go way back — to the days he wrote the first chapters of “Tales of the City” as a serial published in the People section of the Chronicle. Read more about it at “How I Landed a Bit Part in a Real Movie.”  Also, “For One Night I Was Important Again. Thank You, Armistead Maupin.”
